Carbon Laser Peel

Laser-assisted skin renewal that targets oily skin, enlarged pores, dullness and uneven tone — with minimal downtime.

What it is

Carbon Laser Peel is a non-ablative laser-assisted skin treatment that combines a layer of medical-grade carbon lotion with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. It is sometimes informally called a “Hollywood Peel” or “China Doll Peel” elsewhere in the industry. At Klinik Amisi, it is offered as part of our skin pillar to help patients address oiliness, congested pores, dull complexion and uneven tone.

The treatment works on the surface and upper layers of the skin without removing tissue, which is why it is generally classed as a low-downtime laser. It is commonly used by patients who want to refresh tired-looking skin or prepare their complexion before an event, and as a maintenance option for those managing oily or acne-prone skin.

A consultation is required before any first session, so that our doctor can assess your skin type, medical history and current concerns, and confirm whether Carbon Laser Peel is suitable for you.

How it works

A thin layer of carbon lotion is applied to the skin and allowed to settle into the pores. The Q-switched laser is then passed over the area at a wavelength of 1064nm. Carbon particles strongly absorb this laser energy, which vaporises the carbon along with bonded debris, surface dead cells and excess oil. The same controlled thermal effect can support collagen activity in the upper dermis and may help to gently break up superficial pigment over a series of sessions.

Because the laser energy is absorbed primarily by the carbon — not the skin itself — the treatment is generally considered comfortable and is typically suitable for a wide range of skin types when delivered by a trained clinician.

What to expect

Before your treatment

Your first visit begins with a consultation with our doctor. We will discuss your skin concerns, medical history, current skincare routine and any prescription products or recent procedures. Please avoid strong actives such as retinoids or AHAs for several days before your session, and stop using any home exfoliators 24 to 48 hours beforehand. Tell us if you have recently been on isotretinoin — a wait period is usually required.

During the session

The treated area is cleansed and the carbon lotion is applied evenly. Once it has dried, protective eyewear is placed and the laser is passed across the skin in measured passes. Most patients feel a mild tingling or warm sensation and may notice a faint smoky scent as the carbon is vaporised. The active treatment portion typically takes around 15 to 20 minutes; the full appointment is usually about 30 minutes.

After your treatment

Skin may look slightly pink and feel warm for the first hour or two, similar to a mild sunburn sensation. Use gentle cleansers and a non-active moisturiser for the next 24 hours, and avoid heavy makeup if possible for the rest of the day. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ is essential, both during the course of treatments and afterwards.

Recovery and downtime

Carbon Laser Peel is considered a low-downtime treatment for most patients. Mild redness typically settles within 1 to 2 hours, and short-term dryness or a slightly tight feeling can occur for the next day. Some patients with very sensitive skin may experience a longer-lasting flush, which is generally self-limiting. Avoid active exfoliants, sauna, very hot showers and prolonged direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours, and continue strict daily sun protection throughout your treatment course. Results vary between individuals.

Who is this for

Carbon Laser Peel is typically offered to adults who want to address oily or congested skin, refine the look of pores, reduce dullness or support a brighter overall tone with minimal social downtime. It is often suitable for patients with darker skin tones when delivered with appropriate settings, but every case is reviewed individually.

You may be a candidate if you have:

  • Oily or acne-prone skin without active severe cystic lesions
  • Visibly enlarged pores or rough surface texture
  • A dull or uneven-looking complexion
  • Mild post-inflammatory pigmentation or sun-related dullness
  • A specific event for which you would like a freshening pre-treatment
  • Realistic expectations and willingness to follow aftercare

Considerations and contraindications

Carbon Laser Peel is generally not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have active skin infection, open wounds or cold sores in the treatment area, who have severe active cystic acne that requires medical management first, or who have used isotretinoin within the past 6 months. Patients with very photosensitive conditions, recent sunburn, or a history of keloid scarring should be assessed individually. Always inform our doctor of any medications, recent procedures or skin conditions during your consultation, so we can confirm whether this treatment is right for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Carbon Laser Peel suitable for my skin?
It is generally well tolerated across many skin types, including darker tones. A consultation is required so our doctor can review your skin, medical history and any active concerns before recommending whether this treatment is appropriate for you.
Is the treatment painful?
Most patients describe a mild warm or tingling sensation during the laser pulses. Topical numbing is usually not needed. If you have particularly sensitive skin, please discuss this with our team during your consultation.
How quickly will I see a difference?
Many people notice their skin looks smoother and brighter shortly after a session. More meaningful changes in oiliness, pore appearance and tone typically build gradually across a course of sessions. Individual results vary.
How many sessions will I need?
A typical course is 4 to 6 sessions, scheduled every 2 to 4 weeks. After that, some patients choose periodic maintenance sessions. Your doctor will recommend a plan based on your skin assessment.
Are there any side effects?
Common, temporary effects can include mild redness, slight warmth and short-lived dryness. Less common effects include sensitivity or transient pigment changes. We will go through the full risk profile in your consultation.
Can I combine it with other treatments?
Carbon Laser Peel is sometimes paired with hydration facials or other skin protocols, depending on your concerns. Combinations should always be planned by your doctor to avoid over-treating the skin.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on your individual skin assessment and the recommended plan. Please consult our team for current rates and any package options.
Do I need maintenance afterwards?
Many patients return for occasional maintenance sessions to help sustain results, especially if they have oily or congestion-prone skin. Frequency is decided together with your doctor.
