Sculptra

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator — designed to support firmness and structural skin quality through gradual collagen renewal over months.

What it is

Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator from Galderma, offered at Klinik Amisi within the skin pillar. PLLA is a biocompatible material with a long history of medical use; in Sculptra it acts as a scaffold within the skin that may encourage the body’s own collagen production gradually over weeks to months.

Sculptra is positioned around supporting firmness and structural skin quality through this gradual collagen renewal, rather than through immediate volume change. It is part of the broader collagen-stimulating treatment options at the clinic alongside Linerase and Karisma, and is often discussed for patients with moderate concerns who prefer a long-acting biostimulator approach.

A consultation is required before the first session. Our doctor will review your skin condition, medical history and goals before recommending whether Sculptra is appropriate, and how many sessions to plan.

How it works

Sculptra is placed beneath the skin using fine needles. The PLLA microparticles act as a scaffold that the body gradually responds to with new collagen formation. Over the weeks and months that follow, this collagen response can support firmness and structural skin quality in the treated area.

Because Sculptra works through the body’s own collagen response rather than by adding immediate volume, the visible change is gradual and cumulative. Most patients describe meaningful changes from around 6 weeks after a session, with continued progression over several months. A course of sessions is usually needed for the full intended response, and individual results vary.

What to expect

Before your treatment

Your first visit begins with a consultation. We will discuss your skin concerns, medical history, current skincare, any past injectable treatments and any medications including blood thinners. To reduce the risk of bruising, we may suggest avoiding fish oil, high-dose vitamin E and similar supplements for several days before your session, where it is safe to do so.

During the session

The skin is cleansed and a topical numbing cream is usually applied for around 20 to 30 minutes. The doctor reconstitutes the Sculptra and injects it across the planned area using small, controlled placements. Sessions typically take 45 to 60 minutes including numbing and preparation time. You may feel mild stinging or pressure during the injections.

After your treatment

You may see redness, mild swelling or small bumps at the injection points immediately afterwards — these usually settle within a few days. Mild bruising is also possible. You will be asked to follow a specific massage protocol — often described as 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days — to support an even response in the treated area. Avoid heavy makeup for the rest of the day, and skip strenuous exercise, saunas and very hot showers for 24 hours. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ is part of the long-term plan.

Recovery and downtime

For most patients, downtime is mild. Short-term redness, swelling or small bumps typically soften within a few days, while any bruising can take a few days longer to fade. Improvement in firmness and skin quality builds gradually over the months following the course, and individual results vary. Following the massage and aftercare protocol consistently is part of supporting an even response.

Who is this for

Sculptra is typically considered by adults — often around 40 and above — with moderate concerns about firmness and structural skin quality, who prefer a long-acting biostimulator approach over immediate-volume options. It suits patients comfortable with injectable treatments and willing to follow a structured plan and at-home aftercare protocol.

You may be a candidate if you have:

  • Moderate concerns about firmness and structural skin quality
  • A preference for gradual, biostimulator-led change over immediate volume
  • Willingness to commit to a course and follow aftercare, including the massage protocol
  • Realistic expectations about gradual change over months
  • No active skin infection or contraindicating medical conditions

Considerations and contraindications

Sculptra is generally not offered to patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, who have active skin infection, open wounds or cold sores in the treatment area, who have a history of severe allergic reactions to any component of the product, or who have certain autoimmune or bleeding conditions that need medical clearance first. A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring should also be discussed in advance. Recent dental work, acute illness or planned major events within a few days of the session may lead our doctor to reschedule. Always disclose your full medical history, medications and supplements during consultation so the right product — or no treatment at all — can be recommended.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator from Galderma. It works as a biocompatible scaffold within the skin that may encourage the body's own collagen production over weeks to months.
Is this a filler?
Sculptra is sometimes grouped with fillers because it is injected under the skin, but it works differently. It is positioned as a collagen stimulator — supporting gradual collagen renewal — rather than as a hyaluronic acid filler that adds visible volume immediately.
How quickly will I see a difference?
Sculptra acts gradually. Many patients describe meaningful changes around 6 weeks after a session, with continued improvement over several months as new collagen forms. Individual results vary.
How many sessions will I need?
A course is typically planned across several sessions spaced weeks apart. Maintenance sessions are usually planned afterwards. Your doctor will recommend a specific plan based on your skin assessment.
How long do results last?
Improvement from a full course can typically last around 2 years or more for many patients, depending on age, skin condition and lifestyle. Maintenance sessions are usually part of the long-term plan.
Is there a special aftercare protocol?
Yes. Sculptra patients are usually asked to gently massage the treated area for several minutes, several times a day, for several days after the session — often described as a 5-5-5 protocol. Your doctor will demonstrate the technique.
Are there any side effects?
Common short-term effects include redness, swelling, small bumps or bruising. Less common effects include the appearance of small subdermal nodules, which can usually be reduced through correct injection technique and aftercare. Our doctor will go through the full risk profile during consultation.
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on whether you take a single session or a course. Please consult our team for current rates.
